What events qualify for a Special Enrollment Period?
Certain life changes are considered Qualifying Life Events.
You no longer qualify for Apple Health (Medicaid) |
Your family expands – birth adoption, or foster care |
You lose your health insurance – from a job, spouse, or parent |
You move to Washington State or to a different county in WA |
You retire before you’re 65 |
Your relationship status changes – marriage, divorce, separation |
Other examples of events and circumstances that qualify
- Gaining new legal status or citizenship
- A change in your monthly income of $150 or more
- Turning 26 and no longer qualifying for your parent’s insurance
- Getting released from jail or prison
- Caring for an adult child, who qualifies as a tax dependent
- Surviving domestic abuse or violence. Here’s what you need to know.
You have 60 days from the qualifying event to apply for a Special Enrollment Period. For example:
- If you get married on May 1, you have until June 29 to apply
- If you move to Washington on March 1, you have until April 29 to apply

If you don’t qualify right now, you can sign up for a health plan during the next annual Open Enrollment Period (November 15 – December 15) to begin coverage as early as January 1.
