I need a health plan now. Can I sign up outside the Open Enrollment Period?

It’s possible! You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period at any time of year if you experience certain life changes. For example, if you recently:

  • Lost other health insurance coverage.
  • Moved to Washington State or a new county in Washington.
  • Had a baby, adopted a child, or started caring for someone who qualifies as a dependent.
  • In tax terms, became a dependent, or financially reliant on someone other than your spouse due to loss of income, moving households, disability, or something else.
  • Lost or changed jobs; and more.

Financial help

You may qualify for lower costs depending on your income and how many people live in your household.

To see if you qualify for special savings, like lower monthly premiums or reduced out-of-pocket costs, you can go online to Washington Healthplanfinder and complete an application. You can also call us at 1-833-993-0181 (TTY: 711), 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday or request a call back.

Types of special savings

Special savings come from tax credits and cost-share reductions. When you fill out a health insurance application through Washington Healthplanfinder, you’ll find out if you qualify for these savings or other plans, like Medicaid.

Tax credits*

A federal “premium tax credit” reduces your monthly premium payments for insurance plans purchased through health insurance marketplaces such as Washington Healthplanfinder. The tax credit is available to individuals and families with incomes between the federal poverty line and 400 percent of the federal poverty line. You’ll see if you’re eligible for tax credits when you apply for a plan through Healthplanfinder.

Premium savings

Cascade Care Savings is a State program that’s helps reduce the amount you pay monthly. To get these savings, your household must be under a certain income level (under 250% the federal poverty level). Available only with Gold or Silver plans and immigration status does not impact eligibility.

Cost-Share reductions

A cost-share reduction is a type of financial help that lowers the amount you have to pay out-of-pocket at the time you get health care, such as when you go to the doctor’s office or when you get lab tests.

To qualify, your income must be below 250% of the federal poverty line, and you must choose a Silver** plan. When you fill out your application on Healthplanfinder, the cost of each health plan you see will automatically include the amount of financial help you may qualify for.

**American Indians and Alaska Natives (Al/AN) can also qualify for cost-share reductions when enrolled in Gold, Silver, and Bronze plans.

Medicaid

Apple Health (Medicaid) provides free or low-cost coverage for people with lower incomes who meet certain eligibility criteria. Apple Health coverage is also offered by Community Health Plan of Washington.

*U.S. citizens and individuals who have federally documented immigration status (often described as “lawfully present”) may be eligible to receive premium tax credits. Anyone living in Washington who does not have documented status will not be able to get premium tax credit savings, but may still safely apply and qualify for state savings to reduce costs.
